The addition is a modest horizontal box , crafted in response to the homeowners’ love of gardening and Japanese art and architecture. Its two bearing walls of custom concrete block walls sparkle with mica when lit , providing a fitting background for the Japanese textiles. We took advantage of the location of the house at the low point of the site, to establish a window height that places the garden at direct eye level rather than below. With the window wall folded open, the view from the table is immersive. The two skylights in combination with the fans and the masonry walls and floor, keep the room cool enough in summer that it requires no air-conditioning. A small radiator heats it almost year round.
